R Salon Owner Helps Perfect Day Happen Every Day

Imagine your perfect day. At first thought, you (like us) probably picture yourself on a beach somewhere with a drink in hand or taking a relaxing hike through nature. But, at R Salon, our perfect days are a little different—it’s about realizing dreams and achieving goals. It’s serving others and becoming a Daymaker.

We recently sat down with R Salon owner Scott Dennis to learn more about his philosophy of the perfect day, how he helps his team succeed with theirs, and how it benefits guests.

One beautiful Tuesday morning several months ago, Scott realized he was living his “perfect day.” He’d woken up at 4:30 that morning, taught yoga at 6:00 a.m., worked on salon business after class, practiced yoga at 9:00 a.m. and taught again at 10:30 a.m. Then he headed to the salon where he worked tirelessly, ensuring guests had the perfect experience, and mentoring his team. He left sometime between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., heading home to cook dinner and relax with his partner. Sometime during this busy, yet normal day, he realized he’d achieved his dreams. Realizing a regular Tuesday was his “perfect day” felt amazing.

“It was work—hard work—being in service to others: guests, yogis, my team, family, friends. But really, I do it for me,” Scott observed.

After Scott realized he’d achieved his perfect day, he wanted to help his team realize and achieve theirs. So instead of doing typical employee reviews, he sat down with each member of his team to figure out a plan of attack: some wanted flexibility to travel, others wanted weekends with family. Each “perfect day” was a little different—but for Scott one story stood out.

“Maria is one of the most talented aestheticians I’ve ever met. Even aestheticians come to see her because she’s that talented,” Scott gushed. She loves her career, but she also needs to be home for her kids in the afternoon and weekends.

She was a full-time caregiver the first 11 years of her kids’ lives and loved it, but she missed her career. So in creating her “perfect day,” Scott decided she shouldn’t have to choose between something she’s passionate about and her family.

So, now, Maria works Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It sounds like a dream, right? Well, almost. Her limited availability makes it challenging to grow her guest list. Since giving his team permission and support to realize their goals, Scott’s noticed a huge change. “They’re no longer employees—they’re leaders. And essentially every one of them has become a salon manager in their own right. Everyone is accountable and everything gets done.”

Scott says they’re inspired and in control. Everyone is happier and more productive, which means even better guest experiences. And that’s what it’s all about, giving you the best service possible.
